    What We Teach

Here's a list of the subjects we teach, and why we teach it. Have a look!

    Business

The business studies program will build a strong foundation for those who wish to move on to further study and training in specialized areas such as management, international business, marketing, accounting, information and communication technology, or entrepreneurship. It will also provide practical skills for those who wish to move directly into the workplace.

    Computer Studies

Computer studies is about how computers compute. It is not about learning how to use the computer, and it is much more than computer programming. Computer studies is the study of ways of representing objects and processes. It involves defining problems; analysing problems; designing solutions; and developing, testing, and maintaining programs. For the purposes of this document, the term computer studies refers to the study of computer science, meaning computer and algorithmic processes, including their principles, their hardware and software designs, their applications, and their impact on society. The major focus of these courses is the development of programming skills, which are important for success in future postsecondary studies.

    English

Literacy development is a communal project, and the teaching of literacy skills is embedded across the Ontario curriculum. However, it is the English curriculum that is dedicated to developing the knowledge and skills on which literacy is based – that is, knowledge and skills in the areas of listening and speaking, reading, writing, and viewing and representing.

    French

Knowledge of a second language is valuable for a number of reasons. Through learning a second language, students can strengthen their first-language skills and enhance their critical and creative thinking abilities; they also tend to become more tolerant and respectful of other cultures. In addition, the ability to communicate in another language provides students with a distinct advantage in a number of careers, both in Canada and internationally.

    Health

The health and physical education curriculum has been designed to provide learning experiences that will help students realize their potential in life. Students will develop: an understanding of the importance of physical fitness, health, and well-being and the factors that contribute to them; a personal commitment to daily vigorous physical activity and positive health behaviours; the skills and knowledge they require to participate in physical activities throughout their lives.

    Second Languages

Today’s students are living in an international community: nations and peoples throughout the world now depend on each other not only for their economic survival and social stability, but for the success of their undertakings in most areas of human activity. In such a world, communication on the international plane is of crucial importance, and knowledge of languages an invaluable asset. The study of classical and international languages helps students to develop the skills they will need to communicate effectively with people from other countries and at the same time improve their skills in the English language.

    Mathematics

The unprecedented changes that are taking place in today’s world will profoundly affect the future of today’s students. To meet the demands of the world in which they will live, students will need to adapt to changing conditions and learn independently. They will require the ability to use technology effectively and the skills for processing large amounts of quantitative information. Today’s mathematics curriculum must prepare students for their future roles in society. It must equip them with essential mathematical knowledge and skills of reasoning, problem-solving, and communication skills, and, most importantly, the ability and the incentive to continue learning on their own. This curriculum provides a framework for accomplishing these goals.

    Science

During the twentieth century, science played an increasingly important role in the lives of all Canadians. It underpins much of what we now take for granted, from life-saving pharmaceuticals to clean water, the places we live and work in, computers and other information technologies, and how we communicate with others. The impact of science on our lives will continue to grow as the twenty-first century unfolds. Consequently, scientific literacy for all has become a goal of science education throughout the world. Scientific literacy can be defined as possession of the scientific knowledge, skills, and habits of mind required to thrive in the science-based world of the twenty-first century.

    Technological Studies

Technological education focuses on developing students’ ability to work creatively and competently with technologies that are central to their lives. As they proceed through their elementary and secondary school education, students attain a level of technological literacy that will enhance their ability to succeed in their postsecondary studies or in the workplace. For students who do not choose to pursue careers in technology, technological education can provide knowledge and skills that will enhance their daily lives, whether by enabling them to work on home renovations or car repairs or by allowing them to pursue technological hobbies.
